Traveling for the Holidays? Tips for Preparing Your Pet for Boarding Posted on October 11, 2024 By xzuan Here’s what you need to know before booking boarding services for your dogs. By Michele Kettner October 10, 2024 Share The holiday season is right around the corner, and for many people, that means traveling. If you have pets, it’s time to start thinking about making plans for them, too. A lot more goes into booking a boarding stay than just dropping them off at the front door. Here are a few things you need to add to your to-do list before you head off on your getaway. Schedule an evaluation. This allows the staff to see how your pet adjusts to a new environment and if your pet can get along with the other animals at the facility. If your dog isn’t spayed or neutered, check the facility’s policy to see if it is allowed for a stay. See what vaccinations your pet needs. This usually includes rabies, distemper, and Bordetella. You will need an updated record from your vet for boarding. Verify drop-off and pickup hours. Some facilities will require you to pay an extra fee if you miss the given window. Pack enough food for your pet’s stay. Some kennels offer their own food, but switching foods can cause stomach upset for some pets. Don’t forget to bring any necessary medications. The facility may require that it’s in the original container with instructions. Send along a few comfort items. One or two toys or a blanket are typically allowed. Requirements vary for each business. Make sure to check with your provider to ensure your pet qualifies to stay before booking.
